The Election Commission of India has announced that more than 2.37 lakh electors across Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will make use of the home voting facility in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The provision, introduced under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, is meant for voters aged above 85 years and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), enabling them to cast their votes from home through postal ballots.
According to the ECI, polling teams will visit the homes of eligible voters to collect their ballots, with prior notification of the schedule. The home voting process has already started in several constituencies and will continue until April 5.
To maintain transparency, the entire exercise will be videographed, with polling officials accompanied by security personnel. Candidates and political parties have also been informed and may send representatives to observe the process.
The Commission added that voters who do not opt for home voting will be provided necessary assistance at polling stations, including wheelchairs and volunteers, to ensure a smooth voting experience.
The Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry are scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set to take place on May 4.
