Dr. Faridul Islam from Lahorighat resigned from the Indian National Congress on March 29 after being denied a party ticket to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Expressing his dissatisfaction, Hussain told the media that around 80 percent of the people in Lahorighat supported him and pointed to public disappointment over his exclusion from the ticket list. He later joined the All India United Democratic Front, stating that his decision was driven by a commitment to represent the interests of the electorate.
AIUDF’s candidate in Lahorighat, Siddique Ahmed, is currently contesting to unseat sitting MLA Asif Nazar. Dr. Islam’s switch has also led several former Congress leaders, who were denied tickets, to join AIUDF, boosting the party’s campaign strength in the constituency.
With Dr. Islam and these leaders now actively involved in campaigning, AIUDF is aiming to consolidate its support base in Lahorighat. Observers note that the constituency is witnessing increased political activity, with all major parties stepping up their electoral strategies.
