Heavy rainfall on Saturday night caused widespread artificial flooding across Guwahati, leaving several areas inundated and disrupting daily life. In a tragic incident reported from Maligaon, a young woman was swept away by strong currents in a drain during the downpour.
The victim, identified as Payel Nath from Dharapur, was reportedly carried away by fast-flowing water on Sunday. According to initial reports, she slipped into an overflowing drain while attempting to move through waterlogged streets.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed immediately, and search operations continued through the night. In the early hours of Monday, her body was recovered, and officials later confirmed her death.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the city’s drainage system during extreme weather, with open drains and low visibility posing significant risks to residents.
All Educational Institutions Closed
The administration has ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area on April 20. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay alert as authorities continue to monitor the situation. Emergency and rescue operations are still underway.
Meanwhile, large parts of the city remained submerged due to continuous rainfall, severely affecting normal life. Several localities reported heavy waterlogging, bringing traffic to a halt and forcing many residents to stay indoors.
