BJP Misleading Public on Women’s Quota: Mira Borthakur

Mira Borthakur, president of the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress, on Monday launched a strong attack on the BJP-led Centre, accusing it of misleading the public over the implementation of the Women’s Reservation law.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Borthakur alleged that the BJP was attempting to portray the opposition as anti-women while deflecting attention from delays in enforcing the law passed in 2023. She questioned why the legislation has not yet been implemented and criticised the Centre for linking it to delimitation based on the 2011 Census.

Using a sharp analogy, she said the BJP’s approach was like “a snake that bites and then pretends to cure,” indicating that voters are no longer swayed by such tactics.

The Congress leader reiterated her party’s demand for the immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures without any additional conditions. She also claimed that the Congress has shown a stronger commitment to women’s political participation by fielding more female candidates in elections compared to the BJP.

Borthakur further raised concerns about women’s safety and rights, alleging a disconnect between the BJP’s public claims and the ground reality. Referring to statements by senior Congress leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi, and Priyanka Gandhi, she said the opposition remains ready to move ahead with the legislation based on the current composition of Parliament.

She concluded by urging people to critically evaluate political narratives, adding that the Congress will continue to push for women’s rights and fair representation.
