‘Justice Zubeen Garg’ Tops Congress’ Election Promises in Assam

Gearing up for the high-stakes Assam Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress on Sunday unveiled its vision for a “Notun Bor Asom” (New Greater Assam), announcing a set of five major poll promises aimed at reshaping governance in the state.

Branded as the ‘5 Pratishruti’, the commitments cover direct benefit transfers, welfare schemes for women and senior citizens, universal healthcare, and land rights for indigenous communities. Among them, the most prominent promise is to ensure justice for legendary musician Zubeen Garg within 100 days of forming the government.

According to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, led by Gaurav Gogoi, the party is committed to delivering swift justice to the late cultural icon if voted to power.

Among the other key announcements, the Congress has pledged unconditional monthly financial assistance of Rs 50,000 for women to help them start or expand businesses, with funds to be directly transferred to their bank accounts. It has also proposed setting up a dedicated ministry for senior citizens and introducing a universal monthly pension of Rs 1,250.

In the healthcare sector, the party has promised up to Rs 25 lakh in cashless health coverage for every family in the state.

Addressing land-related concerns, the Congress said it would convert Eksoniya land pattas into Miyadi pattas for 10 lakh indigenous people, aiming to ensure land security and ownership.

With just 10 days left for polling, Assam’s political atmosphere has intensified, with parties ramping up campaigns and unveiling major promises as they make their final push to attract voters in what is being seen as a crucial electoral contest.
