In a unique initiative combining sports with environmental responsibility, the Indian Olympic Association has urged all State and Union Territory Olympic bodies to plant 2036 trees each as part of this year’s Olympic Day celebrations.
The appeal was made by IOA President P. T. Usha, who encouraged organisations across the country to turn the occasion into a meaningful environmental movement. The aim is to celebrate Olympic Day not just through sporting activities, but also by contributing to a greener future.
The number 2036 holds symbolic significance, representing the Olympic vision of creating a better and more sustainable world. The initiative also aligns with global efforts by the International Olympic Committee to promote environmental conservation through its Olympic Forest programme.
State and UT associations have been advised to involve schools, athletes, youth groups, and local communities to maximise the impact of the campaign. Tree plantation drives can be organised in playgrounds, schools, parks, and other public spaces to encourage wider participation.
The IOA has also asked participating bodies to document their activities through photographs and reports, enabling the nationwide campaign to be highlighted as part of India’s Olympic Day celebrations.
The initiative reflects the Olympic Movement’s broader vision of fostering a healthier and better world through sport, while promoting environmental sustainability for future generations.
