The Election Commission of India has approved the establishment of four auxiliary polling stations for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections to ease voter congestion and ensure smoother polling. The move follows reports of certain polling stations exceeding the prescribed voter limit, prompting the need for additional arrangements ahead of the statewide elections.
Where New Auxiliary Polling Stations Will Be Set Up
The newly sanctioned auxiliary polling stations will be set up across four districts—Tinsukia, Goalpara, Biswanath, and Sribhumi—with one station allocated to each district. These additional booths are aimed at handling high voter turnout in locations where existing polling stations were found to be overburdened.
Officials had earlier submitted proposals to the Commission highlighting excessive elector numbers at select booths, following which approval was granted.
Polling Station Shift in Jonai Constituency
In a separate development, the Commission has also approved the relocation of a polling station in the Jonai Assembly constituency. Polling Station number 4 at Kabu Sivaguri Lower Primary School will now be shifted to number 4 Silai M.E. School.
The relocation has been cleared due to natural factors and to improve accessibility and convenience for voters in the area.
Measures for Smooth Polling
The introduction of auxiliary polling stations and the relocation of an existing booth are part of broader efforts to streamline the voting process. Authorities stated that these steps are intended to enhance voter convenience while ensuring the orderly and efficient conduct of polling across Assam.
