ECI Announces Dry Days Ahead of Assembly Polls, Counting Day

The Election Commission of India has ordered the enforcement of “dry days” in poll-bound states ahead of the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections and during the vote-counting period.

As per the Commission’s schedule, polling in Tamil Nadu and Phase-I of West Bengal will take place on April 23, while Phase-II polling in West Bengal is set for April 29. Counting of votes for all states and Union Territories will be conducted on May 4.

Under Section 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the sale, distribution, and serving of liquor will be banned for 48 hours leading up to the end of polling in the respective areas. The restriction will also remain in force on the day of counting.

During this period, liquor outlets, hotels, restaurants, clubs, and similar establishments will not be permitted to sell or serve alcohol. Authorities have also been instructed to strictly monitor and regulate the storage of liquor in unlicensed premises.

The Commission stated that the move is intended to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections.
