Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday described Himanta Biswa Sarma as “the most corrupt and most communal Chief Minister in the country.” Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections 2026, Gandhi, in a social media post, accused Sarma of betraying the people of Assam.
He wrote, “Himanta Sarma is the most corrupt and most communal Chief Minister in the country. Himanta Sarma has betrayed and misled the people of Assam – the proof is before the public. The people of Assam will never forgive his corruption – the punishment is certain.”
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Pawan Khera levelled allegations against the Chief Minister and his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, accusing them of holding multiple passports and failing to disclose assets. He said that Sarma has “become an embarrassment for the state.”
Addressing a press conference, Khera raised several questions. He asked, “The entire politics of Himanta Biswa Sarma is based on hatred against Muslims; however, how does his wife hold passports from two Muslim nations? Indian law states that one cannot hold dual citizenship, so does Riniki Bhuyan Sharma hold an Indian passport? Is Himanta Biswa Sarma the adopted son of Amit Shah? And did the Home Minister of the country know that his adopted son’s wife holds three passports?”
“The questions are: What is the need for Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife to hold three passports? Are you some kind of criminal? Does Himanta himself have more such passports somewhere? Is this preparation for fleeing after losing the election?” the Congress leader further questioned.
Meanwhile, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi intensified the attack, demanding a thorough probe into the Chief Minister’s properties. Gogoi said Sarma would have to respond to the allegations and “pay for his crime.”
In a social media post, Gogoi wrote, “Shocking allegations have come out related to Himanta Biswa Sarma. Holding multiple passports and failure to disclose properties is a grave and criminal offence. How much money have they sent from Assam to their bank accounts abroad? More investigation is required. Himanta Biswa Sarma has become an embarrassment for the state of Assam and India. He will have to answer the questions and pay for his crime.
Assam CM’s Counter
Responding to the allegations, Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed them as baseless, stating that the press conference by Pawan Khera reflected “deep frustration” and “panic within the Congress.”
He wrote, “Today’s press conference by Pawan Khera reflects the deep frustration and panic within the Congress party. As Assam moves decisively towards a historic mandate, such desperate and baseless attacks only expose their sinking ground.”
He further said, “I categorically reject every allegation made by him. These are malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam.” The Chief Minister also added that Pawan Khera would face both criminal and civil defamation cases over the press conference within the next 48 hours.
