Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP and president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, on Tuesday addressed a press conference in the national capital, launching a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government over proposed constitutional changes linked to women’s reservation and delimitation.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi criticised the proposed 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, alleging that the government attempted to politically package key constitutional and electoral issues under the banner of women’s empowerment.
He claimed that the ruling party tried to advance its agenda by linking women’s reservation with delimitation and constituency restructuring, which, according to him, could adversely affect smaller states and communities with lower population.
“The opposition stood united to stop this attempt. We have protected the Constitution from being misused for political gains,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi also questioned the delay in implementing the long-pending Women’s Reservation Bill, introduced three years ago, asking why it has not yet been put into effect if the government is genuinely committed to women’s empowerment.
He said the delay raises concerns about the government’s intentions, suggesting that the broader focus may be on delimitation, which could alter political representation in a way that disadvantages smaller states and indigenous communities.
The Congress leader also referred to the Assam Accord, stating that despite repeated assurances, its full implementation remains pending.
He added that several promises made by the Union Home Minister, including those concerning Assam, have not been fulfilled.
Gogoi further said that the opposition continues to raise issues related to Assam with the Centre, including governance, federal structure, and the rights of local communities.
Commenting on the state’s political climate, he claimed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appears frustrated amid recent developments. He also made a controversial remark suggesting that the Chief Minister would have to step down from his post on May 4.
Referring to allegations raised by Congress leader Pawan Khera, Gogoi said several issues are now surfacing in the political landscape.
On law and order, he emphasised that the Assam Police must function in the interest of the public and remain neutral. He stressed that law enforcement agencies should not operate under political pressure and must ensure fairness and justice for all.
Reiterating the opposition’s stance, Gogoi said the Constitution should not be altered or interpreted for political convenience, adding that opposition parties had collectively resisted what he described as an attempt to politicise constitutional amendments.
