In a large-scale nationwide crackdown, authorities have stepped up action against illegal LPG hoarding and black marketing, conducting over 1.28 lakh inspections and seizing more than 59,000 cylinders since March this year.
According to reports, the intensified drive has led to the registration of over 1,000 FIRs, with at least 238 individuals taken into custody. The crackdown comes amid global energy uncertainties, particularly due to the evolving situation in West Asia, which has put pressure on fuel supply chains.
Government agencies, in coordination with oil marketing companies, have increased surveillance through daily inspections, surprise raids, and district-level monitoring to curb diversion and ensure fair distribution of cooking gas.
The enforcement exercise has also uncovered irregularities within the distribution network. Consequently, action has been taken against 219 LPG distributors, while licences of 56 agencies have been temporarily suspended.
Officials emphasised that while strict action is being taken against illegal practices, efforts are also underway to maintain uninterrupted supply for consumers. Domestic LPG, along with piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), continues to be prioritised to avoid disruptions. Commercial LPG supplies are being directed towards essential sectors such as hospitals, educational institutions, and key industries.
To support vulnerable sections, the government has expanded access to 5 kg cylinders, especially for migrant workers. Since late March, more than 13 lakh such cylinders have been distributed through coordinated efforts with state authorities and awareness initiatives.
Authorities are also promoting alternative fuel options to reduce dependence on LPG. These measures include increasing the availability of kerosene and coal, expanding PNG connections, and offering incentives to encourage the adoption of cleaner and sustainable energy sources.
Consumers have been advised against panic buying and urged to rely on official booking systems. Nearly all LPG bookings are now processed digitally, with stricter delivery authentication mechanisms introduced to prevent leakages in the system.
In addition to immediate enforcement, the government is focusing on long-term strategies to strengthen energy security. These include expanding city gas distribution networks, promoting cleaner fuels, and supporting electric mobility and domestic energy manufacturing.
