Tensions flared in Cachar district after Congress candidate Amar Chand Jain was allegedly obstructed and attacked while campaigning at Kurkuri Tea Garden in the Katigorah constituency.
According to reports, Jain had arrived at the tea garden as part of his campaign outreach when a group of alleged supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stopped his convoy and blocked his entry. The group raised slogans opposing his visit and resisted his campaign activity in the area. Protesters reportedly accused sitting Congress MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumder of failing to deliver development in the tea garden over the past five years, arguing that the party did not deserve their support.
As tensions escalated, a heated exchange broke out between the two sides. The situation soon turned aggressive, with the group allegedly surrounding Jain’s vehicle and forcing it to stop. They reportedly attempted to compel the driver to turn back and leave the area.
When the driver refused, he was allegedly assaulted by members of the group. Eyewitnesses said the mob then tried to target Jain as well, attempting to reach him amid the chaos.
Jain’s security personnel intervened promptly and managed to escort him away from the scene before the situation worsened. He was taken to safety as tensions remained high in the area.
Following the incident, a complaint was lodged at the local police station seeking action against those involved in the alleged attack and obstruction.
Jain had recently defected from the BJP to join the Indian National Congress ahead of the elections and is currently contesting against BJP candidate Kamalkhya Dey Purkayastha.
