Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress MP, on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of fostering “syndicate mafia” politics in the state. Speaking at a campaign rally, Gogoi also promised sweeping reforms if the Congress comes to power.
He alleged that BJP election tickets are being handed out to individuals with links to syndicate networks, a trend he said weakens fairness and transparency in the political system. Gogoi further accused Sarma of betraying former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, pointing to signs of internal discord within the ruling party.
Outlining his vision for a “New Assam” (Notun Bor Axom), Gogoi stressed the need for governance rooted in accountability and integrity. He said that, if elected, the Congress would bring in a law to bar close associates of ministers and their family members from obtaining government contracts—an effort aimed at tackling favouritism and corruption.
During his address, Gogoi noted that Congress candidate Raton Engti has been actively campaigning in the constituency alongside him. He also took aim at Tuliram Ronghang while presenting a roadmap for developing Karbi Anglong. Gogoi asserted that a Congress-led government would ensure peace, development, and progress in the region.
Invoking the legacy of his late father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, he emphasised the importance of staying connected with the poor and marginalised sections of society.
