Commercial LPG cylinder prices in India have been increased, with the cost of a 19-kg cylinder rising by Rs 195.50 in Delhi, according to reports on Wednesday. State-run oil companies attributed the hike to global supply uncertainties and rising crude oil prices. In Kolkata, the price of the same cylinder has gone up by Rs 218.
Domestic LPG cylinder prices, however, remain unchanged for now. The last revision saw an increase of Rs 60 for a 14.2-kg cylinder on March 7, following a spike in international oil prices amid tensions between Iran and the United States. In Delhi, a 14.2-kg domestic cylinder is currently priced at Rs 913.
State-owned energy companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum revise LPG and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices on the first day of every month, based on global crude benchmarks and foreign exchange rates.
Jet fuel prices have also been revised across major cities:
- Delhi: Rs 2,07,341.22 per kilolitre
- Kolkata: Rs 2,05,953.33 per kilolitre
- Mumbai: Rs 1,94,968.67 per kilolitre
- Chennai: Rs 2,14,597.66 per kilolitre
The price increase is partly linked to disruptions in global shipping, including a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that carries nearly 20% of global crude oil shipments. Although some Indian vessels have managed to pass through, overall shipping activity has been impacted, pushing oil prices higher.
Amid the ongoing situation, authorities are promoting the use of piped natural gas (PNG) as an alternative to LPG. Unlike LPG, which depends heavily on imports, PNG is supplied through a fixed pipeline network, offering a more stable and reliable option for households and businesses.
