The Assam Jatiya Parishad on Monday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026 during a press conference held at Greenwood Resort in Khanapara.
The party has declared nominees for eight constituencies, while the final decision regarding candidates for Sadiya and Guwahati Central is still under discussion.
The candidates announced are:
Khowang – Lurinjyoti Gogoi
Barhampur – Rajen Gohain
Morigaon – Bani Das
Palashbari – Pankaj Lochan Goswami
Bajali – Dilip Barua
Sarupathar – Jiban Chutia
Dibrugarh – Mainak Patra
Binnakandi – Rezaul Karim Chowdhury
Speaking at the press conference, party leaders including Lurinjyoti Gogoi criticised the decision of the Election Commission of India to provide only 13 days for election campaigning. They described the move as “intentional” and alleged that it benefits a particular political party. According to them, the decision limits public awareness on several issues, including concerns related to performances by Zubeen Garg during the Bihu festival, and restricts the time available for opposition parties to campaign.
The party leadership also said that efforts are being made to prevent division of votes, noting that extensive discussions have been held to bring different groups together ahead of the elections. They confirmed that the party plans to contest 10 seats, with “friendly competition” likely in two or three constituencies.
Meanwhile, the Assam National Parishad also released its list of eight candidates on the same day, signalling broader electoral preparations by regional parties for the upcoming Assembly polls. Party leaders stated that the announcements made today represent the first phase of their election preparations.
