The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration on Sunday imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, across Guwahati, anticipating a surge in nomination filings on the final day. The order, issued by District Magistrate Swapneel Paul, is aimed at regulating movement and preventing congestion near the District Commissioner’s office along Hengrabari Road.
Authorities expect large gatherings of political workers and supporters, along with increased vehicular traffic in the area, prompting these precautionary steps to maintain order during the nomination process.
Restrictions imposed
The administration has prohibited rallies and processions from proceeding beyond the Ganeshguri-Hengrabari Road junction near the Ganeshguri flyover, to ensure smooth traffic movement along the narrow stretch leading to the DC office.
Public gatherings have been strictly banned in and around the District Commissioner’s office premises on Hengrabari Road for the duration of the order. Officials cautioned that uncontrolled crowds could disrupt movement and create congestion during this crucial phase of the election process.
Entry limited
Access to the DC office premises has been restricted to individuals officially authorised to participate in the nomination process, in accordance with guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India.
The district administration stated that these measures are necessary to maintain public order, ensure safety, and facilitate the smooth conduct of election-related activities. Authorities have appealed to political parties and citizens to cooperate and strictly follow the guidelines to avoid any disruptions.
