The Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal on Sunday announced Hari Prasad Saikia as its candidate from the Bokakhat constituency in Golaghat district, completing its quota of 13 seats under the alliance agreement with the Congress for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
The candidate was finalised ahead of the March 23 deadline for filing nominations. Under the seat-sharing arrangement, Raijor Dal has been allotted 13 constituencies to contest this election. The agreement was reached after initial alliance talks with the Congress had collapsed, with both parties later returning to negotiations and finalising the deal.
Meanwhile, Hari Prasad Saikia, former chairman of the Assam Pradesh Kisan Congress, resigned from the party on Sunday through a letter addressed to All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge.
In his letter, he cited “personal and political reasons” for stepping down from his position. However, the development is being viewed as part of the understanding reached between the Congress and Raijor Dal.
Notably, the Raijor Dal had on Saturday released a fresh list of candidates, announcing names for the constituencies allotted to it. The party had earlier declared its candidates when alliance talks with the Congress had collapsed and it had decided to contest the elections independently.
