JMM Announces Entry into Assam Polls, Plans to Contest 31 Constituencies

With the schedule for the Assam Assembly elections now announced, a new political player has stepped into the contest for Dispur. The Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has decided to contest 31 seats in the upcoming polls.

The decision was confirmed by the party after a meeting of its central committee comprising senior leaders. In a statement issued after the meeting, the party said, “Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has decided to contest 31 seats in the upcoming Assam legislative assembly elections. This decision was taken following detailed discussions at a central committee meeting of the party’s senior leaders.”

The statement further noted that the party sees significant political space in Assam due to the presence of a large tribal population as well as people with roots in Jharkhand. “Jharkhand Mukti Morcha will give strength to these voices and will enter the elections aiming to protect their rights,” it added.

The party is expected to release its list of candidates soon. Polling for the Assam Assembly elections will take place on April 9, while the last date for filing nominations is March 23, indicating that the candidate list could be announced within the week.

“Jharkhand Mukti Morcha believes the people of Assam will support politics of development, respect and rights,” the statement concluded.

Notably, JMM chief Hemant Soren recently visited Assam, where he held separate meetings with leaders of two opposition parties, fuelling speculation that a possible electoral alliance may be in the works.
