Setback for UPPL as Senior Leader Chandan Brahma Quits Party

Chandan Brahma, a senior leader of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), has resigned from the party, dealing a setback ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam.

Brahma submitted his resignation to UPPL president Pramod Boro on March 15. He had joined the party around two years ago, in April 2024, after leaving the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) along with a large number of supporters.

At the time of his joining, a ceremony was organised in Kajalgaon in Chirang district, which was seen as a major development in the political landscape of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Brahma’s resignation comes shortly after another prominent UPPL leader, Kampa Borgoyary, stepped down from the party earlier. Political observers say the departure of two senior leaders could impact the party’s strategy in the BTR, where political activity has been intensifying ahead of the elections.

While the exact reasons behind the resignations have not been officially confirmed, the timing has drawn attention. With elections approaching, these developments have highlighted possible internal challenges within the UPPL and may signal shifting political alignments in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
