Heavy Rain Batters Guwahati, IMD Issues Fresh Warning for Assam

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted continued adverse weather conditions over Assam for the next two to three days, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts as an intense weather system remains active over the region.

The alert comes as large parts of Guwahati have already been hit by overnight rain, leading to widespread waterlogging, disruption of daily life, and once again exposing the city’s fragile drainage infrastructure.

Rainfall data recorded on April 20, 2026, shows extremely high precipitation across multiple locations in and around Guwahati. Guwahati Airport recorded 117.4 mm of rainfall, Guwahati City ARG 126.5 mm, AAU-HRS 119.5 mm, Gauhati University 134 mm, while the SIRD Complex in Khanapara reported a massive 215.9 mm. These figures indicate an intense and widespread rainfall event affecting both urban and surrounding areas.

The IMD has warned that the current system is likely to persist, bringing further spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state in the coming days. Meteorological assessments suggest that conditions may worsen in some areas, increasing the risk of urban flooding, landslides in vulnerable hilly regions, and disruption to essential services.

Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during periods of intense rainfall and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone zones.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has also issued a public advisory, urging people to remain alert and take necessary precautions. It has recommended that commuters and long-distance travellers plan their journeys carefully and avoid travelling during heavy rain spells.

Residents living in flood-prone and hillside areas have been asked to stay vigilant for signs of water accumulation or land instability. The authority has further urged the public to follow official advisories and rely on verified weather updates.

Officials said emergency response teams are on standby, and the situation is being closely monitored as rainfall continues to impact normal life across the region.

In view of the situation, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration ordered the closure of all government and private schools and educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area for the day. The step was taken as a precaution amid ongoing rainfall and severe waterlogging in several localities.

Multiple areas, including Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Hatigaon, and Rukminigaon, reported water levels ranging from knee-deep to waist-deep, severely affecting traffic movement during peak hours. Major roads witnessed long traffic jams as vehicles struggled to move through flooded stretches. In several places, residents reported water entering homes, forcing families to move belongings to safer areas.

Amid these conditions, a tragic incident was reported from Maligaon, where a woman accidentally slipped into an overflowing drain during heavy rain and was swept away by the strong current. After search operations, her body was later recovered.
