Overnight heavy rain has once again plunged Guwahati and its surrounding areas into severe urban flooding, with large parts of Kamrup Metropolitan district facing extensive waterlogging since early Monday morning.
Several low-lying and densely populated neighbourhoods—including Rukminigaon, Hatigaon, Juripar, Ghoramara, Panjabari, Sijubari, Satgaon, Jatia, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Rajgarh, Sorumotoria, Bormotoria, Narengi, Maligaon, and Boragaon—were among the worst hit, as roads were submerged and normal movement came to a standstill.
Officials said emergency response systems were activated immediately after multiple distress calls were received through toll-free helplines. Teams from Fire and Emergency Services, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other agencies were deployed to affected areas to assist residents and carry out rescue operations. So far, around 50 people have been evacuated from inundated locations.
The District Disaster Management Authority reported that water levels in several areas are gradually receding. To tackle the situation, authorities deployed 22 major pumps and 35 portable pumps across key flood-affected zones, including Rukminigaon, Tarun Nagar, Anil Nagar, Lachit Nagar, and Bharalu Mukh.
Despite continuous dewatering efforts, many localities remain submerged, severely disrupting daily life, traffic, and essential services.
In a tragic development, a woman identified as Payel Nath from Dharapur died after falling into an overflowing drain at Maligaon Chariali. She was rescued and taken to Pandu FRU, where doctors later declared her dead.
Officials from the DDMA, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, along with police, Fire and Emergency Services, SDRF, and the National Disaster Response Force, have been deployed at vulnerable points since last night to manage rescue and relief operations.
Rainfall data over the past 24 hours shows heavy to very heavy showers across multiple parts of the city and adjoining areas, significantly contributing to the current flood-like conditions.
With water still stagnant in several locations, authorities continue to keep a close watch on the situation as residents face mobility issues and recurring flooding, once again highlighting the city’s ongoing drainage challenges.
