In a Facebook Live broadcast, Borthakur claimed there were major irregularities in the voting process. She said several genuine voters found that their votes had already been cast by unknown individuals before they reached the polling station. She cited the case of a woman who arrived with her daughter—while the daughter was able to vote, the mother was reportedly denied as someone else had already voted in her name.
She further alleged that a presiding officer instructed polling agents not to properly verify or mark voter names, and instead simply write “Dispur Assembly Constituency.”
“I personally went to the Don Bosco School polling station and informed my polling agent about the issue near the EVM, but no proper action was taken. Meanwhile, BJP presiding officers were openly asking people to vote for BJP,” Borthakur said.
In another instance, a daughter whose mother’s vote had allegedly been cast by someone else contacted an election officer, who advised her to speak with the presiding officer. However, when they approached him, they were reportedly questioned and told, “Do you not trust us? You don’t have time to wait.” Borthakur said she explained the issue, but their concerns were dismissed.
A Congress polling agent also alleged that while she was carrying out her duties, the presiding officer asked her to write “BJP Vidhan Sabha” instead of properly verifying and marking the voter list. “When I insisted on checking who had come and marking the list accordingly, the officer refused and said nothing would happen, and I should just write it,” she stated.
Borthakur emphasised that polling officials should act as neutral public servants rather than representatives of any political party. “People should be free to vote for whoever they choose without any pressure,” she said.
She also pointed out that campaigning was supposed to end at 5 PM the previous day, yet BJP workers were allegedly still campaigning with flags until the morning. She noted that while other parties could have done the same, they chose not to in order to respect democratic norms.
A similar incident was reported from Polling Station No. 30 in Geetanagar under the New Guwahati constituency, where votes were allegedly cast in the names of genuine voters by unidentified individuals. Several voters reportedly discovered their votes had already been recorded upon arrival, and officials were unable to clarify who had cast them. The incident is said to have affected multiple voters. : write headlines for the article
