Kunki Chowdhury Hits Back as Assam CM Targets Her, Calls Allegations ‘Baseless’

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury has strongly reacted to remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about her mother, calling the allegations “baseless” and politically motivated.

Responding on social media, Chowdhury opened her statement by thanking the Chief Minister, saying that mentioning her mother had only amplified her visibility.

“By bringing my mother’s name into the discussion, the issue has now reached a wider audience. Now people across the country will know who I am,” she said.

The controversy arose after Sarma, during a media interaction, raised questions about Chowdhury’s mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury. He alleged that her social media posts had hurt religious sentiments, claiming she had shared content related to beef consumption and made remarks on religious and political issues.

The Chief Minister also accused her of expressing views on sensitive national matters and questioned the AJP leadership for fielding such a candidate, urging party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi to look into the matter.

Dismissing the allegations, Kunki Chowdhury said the attack reflects growing unease among her political rivals. She claimed her entry into the Guwahati Central contest has unsettled established leaders.

“This shows that some political leaders are already feeling insecure. Their reaction suggests they are worried about losing ground,” she said.

Chowdhury, who joined politics just 15 days ago, said she has received an overwhelming response from the public so far. She added that the increasing support has made a noticeable impact, drawing attention even from the top levels of the state leadership.

“I have been in politics for only 15 days, but the encouragement from people has been huge. We will continue to raise the voice of the people and represent the new generation,” she said.
