D. K. Shivakumar has expressed strong confidence that the Indian National Congress will secure a two-thirds majority in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections 2026, countering claims made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Shivakumar, speaking ahead of the polls, said, “Mr Amit Shah is saying they (BJP) will win two-thirds seats, but we will win two-thirds, and they will win one-third.” His remarks come amid intensified political exchanges between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress as both sides prepare for the April 9 elections.
On March 29, Amit Shah had launched a sharp attack on the Congress during a rally in Nalbari, alleging that the party had altered Assam’s demographics over time for vote-bank politics. He claimed that the BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, had taken firm steps to secure the state’s borders and reclaim land allegedly encroached upon by infiltrators.
Shah further said, “This land, soil and culture belong to us. No infiltrator has any right over it.” He also highlighted the BJP government’s achievements, including a decline in violence and bomb blasts, and announced plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Assam to promote equality and curb practices such as multiple marriages.
The Assam Assembly elections will be held in a single phase across all 126 constituencies on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The contest is shaping up as a direct battle between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government, which is seeking a third consecutive term, and the Congress, which is aiming to return to power.
