An IndiGo flight carrying 161 passengers made an emergency landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday morning following an engine failure, authorities said. A full emergency was declared, but all passengers were safely evacuated and no damage was reported, according to the fire department.
The fire department received the alert at 10:54 AM and promptly deployed fire tenders to the runway as a precautionary measure.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737 operating as flight 6E 579, was en route from Visakhapatnam to Delhi. The plane had been wet-leased from Turkey-based Corendon Airlines, one of five such aircraft currently operated by IndiGo on a short-term basis.
IndiGo stated that the technical issue was identified shortly before landing, following which the pilots requested priority landing as a precaution. “The aircraft arrived safely at Delhi, all relevant authorities were informed, and the aircraft is now undergoing checks and maintenance. Safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority,” a spokesperson for the airline said.
Officials confirmed that there were no injuries or damage, and the matter is being investigated in line with standard safety protocols.
