The Centre on Friday dismissed rumours about a possible lockdown and fuel shortage in India, assuring citizens that no such measures are being considered.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made it clear that there will be no lockdown similar to the one imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Describing the claims as “baseless”, she urged people not to fall for misinformation.
“There shall not be any lockdown. I want to reassure people that there will be no such lockdown,” she said.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also reiterated the same message, calling the rumours false and irresponsible. He appealed to the public to remain calm and rely on official information.
The clarification comes amid a sharp rise in global crude oil prices due to tensions in West Asia. Despite the situation, the government said there is no shortage of fuel in the country.
To shield consumers from rising costs, the Centre has taken steps to keep fuel prices in check. It has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel to ease the burden on the public, and imposed export duties to ensure adequate domestic availability.
Sitharaman said the government is absorbing the financial impact to prevent any sudden increase in fuel prices or shortages, adding that efforts are ongoing to maintain smooth supply across the country.
Puri noted that fuel prices have increased in many parts of the world due to global developments, but India has chosen not to pass on the full impact to consumers.
He also assured that fuel stocks are sufficient and supply chains are being closely monitored. The government, he said, is fully prepared to manage any challenges and ensure uninterrupted availability of essential commodities.
Both ministers cautioned against spreading or believing rumours, especially during sensitive times, and urged people to depend only on official updates.
