The mystery surrounding the death of Assam’s celebrated music icon Zubeen Garg has been resolved, with a Singapore court ruling that he died due to accidental drowning.
Delivering the verdict on Wednesday, State Coroner Adam Nakhoda said the conclusion aligns with the findings of the Police Coast Guard investigation. After examining all available evidence, the court found no indication of foul play.
Zubeen Garg was discovered floating face down in the waters near Lazarus Island in September 2025 after going for a swim. A death certificate issued by Singapore General Hospital had also confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
In its detailed order, the Coroner’s Court termed the incident “unfortunate and accidental,” clearly stating that there was no evidence of force or wrongdoing. It noted that no one had pushed or compelled the singer into the water, nor was there any intent to harm him.
The court also addressed earlier allegations of a possible conspiracy, stating that no evidence was found to support such claims. The findings reinforce the conclusions reached earlier by the Police Coast Guard.
The ruling follows a delay in the announcement of the coroner’s findings, which were initially expected on March 13, 2026, leading to speculation around the case.
The Singapore Coroner’s Court conducted a thorough inquiry, including a three-day hearing with testimonies from multiple witnesses. These included two sailors connected to the incident, a Singapore-based acquaintance of the singer, and the doctor who carried out the post-mortem.
The court also reviewed written submissions from the singer’s family before arriving at its final decision.
With the verdict now pronounced, the investigation into the circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore has officially concluded.
