With the scrutiny of nomination papers scheduled for today, the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 have entered a crucial phase, as political parties prepare to launch full-scale campaigns. Observers have noted a visible rise in support for the Congress across the state.
Speaking ahead of the elections, Bhupesh Baghel, former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and Congress-appointed election observer for Assam, described the contest as a battle between the “real” Congress and the “fake” Congress. He asserted that the “real” Congress is led by Gaurav Gogoi, while the faction aligned with the ruling party under Himanta Biswa Sarma represents the “fake” Congress.
Baghel also pointed to the inclusion of leaders like Bhupen Bora and Pradyut Bordoloi, describing it as a boost for the party ahead of the polls. He expressed confidence that voters in Assam would back Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership to bring about political change.
“Since Gaurav Gogoi assumed leadership, Assam’s political atmosphere has shifted. The people are eager to end misrule and intimidation, and this time they are poised to deliver change at the ballot box,” Baghel said. He added that voters are looking for an alternative to what he termed the arrogance and corruption of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government.
The Assam Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The high-stakes contest between the Congress and the ruling BJP is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with Baghel expressing confidence in a strong mandate for the Gaurav Gogoi-led Congress.
