Jharkhand: Bomb Disposal Team Rushes After WWII Device Found

A tense situation emerged in parts of Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur after a suspected World War II-era explosive device was discovered during sand extraction near the Swarnarekha River, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.

The incident came to light on March 21 in the Panipara–Nagursai area under Bahragora police limits, where villagers reportedly found a large metallic object buried beneath the sand, which described it as highly powerful. Authorities are now preparing to defuse the bomb on March 22.

According to reports, the presence of a high-intensity explosive triggered swift action, with the area being sealed off and additional security personnel deployed to restrict civilian movement as panic spread among nearby residents.

Initial assessments indicate that the device may be an unexploded remnant from the Second World War. Officials noted that the bomb is roughly the size of a domestic gas cylinder and weighs over 200 kilograms. Markings on its surface reportedly suggest a foreign origin, reinforcing the possibility that it is wartime ordnance.

Despite being decades old, experts have warned that the device remains unstable and could cause serious damage if disturbed.

Given the potential threat, a specialised bomb disposal squad from Ranchi has been deployed to the site, with support from the Indian Army.

Authorities have issued strict advisories urging residents in the surrounding areas to stay away until the operation is completed. The defusal process is expected to be conducted under close supervision by trained experts to ensure safety and prevent any risk to life or property.
