Police in Bongaigaon have arrested two alleged human traffickers in connection with a case involving the trafficking of a minor girl. The accused have been identified as Abdul Rahim and Zohar Uddin Poddar.
The case came to light after a young girl was reportedly lured with the promise of marriage and taken to Haryana, where she was allegedly sold for Rs 60,000.
According to police, incidents of human trafficking have been rising in the state, with traffickers continuing their operations despite repeated crackdowns by law enforcement agencies. Acting on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, the Jogighopa Police Station under Bongaigaon police launched an operation and arrested Abdul Rahim from Jogighopa and Zohar Uddin Poddar from Dhubri.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused had been targeting girls from economically vulnerable families for a long time. They allegedly used the promise of marriage as a means to lure the victims into a human trafficking network.
Police have registered a case at Jogighopa police station under Sections 87 and 143 of the Indian Penal Code, with Case No. 31/26. Further investigation is currently underway as authorities attempt to uncover the wider network involved and ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.
