A serious incident occurred at the district jail in Nikashi, Baksa, triggering panic in the area. According to initial reports, a security jawan allegedly attempted to take his own life by firing his service weapon inside the jail premises. The injured has been identified as Gunajit Baishya, a personnel of the 24 IR Battalion and a resident of Baghmara in Bajali district.
Sources said the gunshot left him critically injured. He was immediately provided medical attention and later shifted to AIIMS, where he is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition.
The incident has heightened tension in the area, particularly due to the sensitivity of the jail. Notably, five accused in the high-profile Zubeen Garg murder case are lodged in the same Nikashi jail, adding to concerns.
Following the incident, senior officials, including the district Superintendent of Police, reached the spot and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
While the reason behind the alleged suicide attempt remains unclear, authorities are examining all possible angles.
