Manipur: Ex-Army Man Among 2 Killed in Militant Ambush in Ukhrul district

Two people, including a former Indian Army serviceman, were killed and at least two others critically injured in a suspected militant ambush in Ukhrul district on Saturday.

The attack occurred around 2:30 pm along the Imphal–Ukhrul road between Litan and TM Kasom. According to police sources, a convoy of four civilian vehicles was travelling from Imphal towards Ukhrul and Kamjong when unidentified armed militants opened fire without warning.

Among those killed was former Army personnel SW Chinaoshang, a resident of Tashar village in Ukhrul district who had earlier served in the Naga Regiment. The second victim, identified as 42-year-old Yaruingam Vashum from Kharasom CV village, died at Ukhrul District Hospital after sustaining bullet injuries in the attack.

Two others were seriously injured and are currently undergoing treatment, officials confirmed.

Initial reports indicate that the convoy had security escort up to Litan but proceeded without protection beyond that point, where the ambush took place. The attackers are believed to have fled immediately after firing at the vehicles.

Following the incident, security forces reached the site and launched search operations to locate those responsible.

The ambush comes amid a string of violent incidents reported from the district. A day earlier, gunfire was reported in Sinakeithei village during clashes between suspected armed groups from different communities. The exchange reportedly lasted for several hours before security forces intervened and brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has denied any involvement in the ambush. In a statement, the organisation said it had no role in the attack and condemned the incident.

The attack also comes soon after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand visited Ukhrul district as part of his “Journey for Peace” initiative, aimed at easing tensions among communities.

Manipur has been witnessing prolonged ethnic unrest since May 2023, largely between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups. The violence has resulted in hundreds of deaths and displaced thousands, leaving the situation tense and unpredictable.
