Rahul Gandhi on April 18 alleged that the BJP-led central government attempted to introduce changes to the country’s electoral map under the pretext of a women’s reservation bill. Speaking at an election rally, he claimed that states such as Assam and Jammu and Kashmir have already experienced such changes, and similar measures could be implemented nationwide.
Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to alter the balance of representation among states, alleging that the move could disadvantage smaller and northeastern states. He described the alleged proposal as “anti-national” and contrary to India’s federal structure, adding that the opposition united to resist and defeat the bill in Parliament.
He further claimed that delimitation was being used as a political tool to influence representation and cautioned that such actions could affect the cultural, linguistic, and political identity of various states. Gandhi also urged voters to stay alert, emphasizing that safeguarding the Constitution and the federal framework remains essential.
